History of Cicada Consulting

Cicada was founded in 1995 as a sole proprietorship.  Our staff quadrupled in size during 1996; we incorporated under the laws of the State of North Carolina on July 31, 1996.

How we got our name

Our name came years before the company was founded, during a walk in the Boylan Heights neighborhood of Raleigh, NC.  Our original founder had returned to NC State University to study computer science around 1990. In those classes, he was introduced to the Internet, which at that time was more-or-less entirely command line driven. Even so, the incredible power and reach of the network was astounding.

During the walk mentioned above, he marvelled at the incredible ability to find and communicate with others around the world. Cicadas were singing in the neighborhood, and he thought, "If I ever have a computer on the Internet, I want my email address to be 'such-and-such@cicada.com'."  Years later, after retelling the story to a co-worker and subsequent co-founder  the Cicada name asserted itself as the code-name for an early project and later as the company name.

Goals

The founders bring high expectations to the company.  The most notable of these expectations is not monetary.  Our company exists to satisfy its customers and to provide a work environment that is rewarding to its employees.  Each goal is as necessary as the other.  Satisfying customers is our most critical goal.  Without a rewarding work environment, however, the challenge of satisfying customers is greatly increased.  We strive to foster creativity and encourage intellectual challenge for our employees.  We strive to address every need of employees and customers that we can identify and reasonably accommodate.  Perhaps our most notable goal is the deep desire to make customers and employees happy, literally happy.

Confidentiality

We do not sell or otherwise provide any information in our database to third parties. Cicada uses industry-standard encryption technologies when transferring and receiving consumer data exchanged with our site. We have appropriate security measures in place in our physical facilities to protect against the loss, misuse or alteration of information that is collected from on our site.
